Candy-Stripe Twist Cookies

Candy-Stripe Twist Cookies

Ingredients

3 1/4 cups sifted flour
4 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup (1 stick) butter or margarine
1 egg
1 1/4 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon oil of anise
1/4 cup milk
Red food coloring

Method

1. Measure flour, baking powder, and salt into sifter.
2. Cream butter or margarine and sugar until fluffy in large bowl; beat in egg and oil of anise.
3. Sift in dry ingredients, a third at a time, add alternately with milk; stir until well-blended.
4. Spoon half of the dough into a medium-size bowl; blend in a few drops of red food coloring to into pink; leave the other half plain.
5. Pinch off about a teaspoonful each of ping and white dough at a time, and roll each into a pencil thin strip about 5 inches long on lightly floured pastry cloth or board.  Place strips side by side, pressing ends together, then twist into a rope. Place, 1 inch apart, on ungreased cooky sheets.
6. Bake in moderate oven (350-degrees) 10 minutes or until firm.  Remove carefully, cool on wire racks.
