German Chocolate Cake with Icing

German Chocolate Cake with Icing
A classic recipe for German Chocolate Cake, along with a recipe for the traditional coconut and pecan topping.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 cup Crisco
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 bar baking chocolate
  • 1/2 cup boiling water
  • 2 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 tsp soda
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • Dash salt

Topping for German Chocolate Cake

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 stick oleo
  • 3 egg yolks, beaten
  • 1 cup coconut
  • 1/2 cup pecans

Method

German Chocolate Cake

  • Cream shortening and sugar together, separate eggs and add egg yolks, one at a time to the shortening and sugar.
  • Add chocolate to the boiling water, add flour and buttermilk, (dissolve soda in 1/4 cup of the buttermilk), add vanilla & salt.
  • Fold in beaten egg whites. 
  • Bake 30 minutes at 350-degrees. 

Topping for German Chocolate Cake

  • Cook together slowly sugar, milk, butter, and egg yolks in a heavy broiler until thick, stirring constantly.
  • Add coconut, pecans, and vanilla.
