German Chocolate Cake with Icing

German Chocolate Cake with Icing

Ingredients

2 cups sugar
1 cup Crisco
4 eggs
1 bar baking chocolate
1/2 cup boiling water
2 1/2 cups flour
1 cup buttermilk
1 teaspoon soda
1 teaspoon vanilla
Dash salt

Method

Cream shortening and sugar together, separate eggs and add egg yolks, one at a time to the shortening and sugar. Add chocolate to the boiling water, add flour and buttermilk, (dissolve soda in 1/4 cup of the buttermilk), add vanilla & salt. Fold in beaten egg whites. 

Bake 30 minutes at 350-degrees. 

 

Topping for German Chocolate Cake

Ingredients

1 cup sugar
1 cup milk
1 stick oleo
1 teaspoon vanilla
3 beaten egg yolks
1 cup coconut
1/2 cup pecans

Method

Cook together slowly sugar, milk, butter, and egg yolks in a heavy broiler until thick, stirring constantly. Add coconut, pecans, and vanilla.
