Jumbals - Jumbles

Ingredients
1/3 cup butter
1/3 cup sugar
1 egg
3/4 cup flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon mace
Method
1. Adjust oven at 350-degrees F.
2. Cream together the butter and sugar. Add the egg.
3. Sift together the flour, salt, and mace. Beat these dry ingredients into butter-sugar mixture.
4. Drop the batter by spoonfuls on a buttered cookie sheet and bake in the preheated oven ten minutes
Yield: Two dozen cookies.
This recipe is based on one in "The Compleat Housewife", by E. Smith, published in London in the eighteenth century.
Notes:
Cookies of this sort are still known to Americans as Jumbles.
Quick to assemble.
A good, very plain but subtly flavored cooky. Drop small teaspoons - brown edged.
