Old Fashioned Apple Pan Dowdy ~ Sugar and Spice

  • 1 cup brown sugar packed
  • 1/4 cup flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vinegar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • dash nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons butter or margarine

The Biscuit like Topping ~ The Baking

  • 1 cup sifted all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3 tablespoons shortening
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 5 cups sliced pared, tart apples


Old Fashioned Apple Pan Dowdy ~ Sugar and Spice

  • In 1 quart saucepan, mix sugar, flour, and salt.
  • Add vinegar and water; stir well.
  • Cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until thick.
  • Remove from heat; cool.
  • Add cinnamon, and other stuff.

The Biscuit like Topping ~ The Baking

  • Start heating oven to 375-degrees.
  • While sugar and spice syrup cools, sift flour, baking powder and salt together twice.
  • With a pastry blender, cut in shortening until lumps are the size of peas.
  • Add milk and stir until flour mixture is moistened but still lumpy.
  • Place apple slices in well greased, deep 10-inch pie plate or 12x8x2-inch baking dish.
  • Pour “sugar and spice” syrup over them.
  • Drop biscuit-like topping over apples.
  • Bake 40 minutes.
