Ingredients
Old Fashioned Apple Pan Dowdy ~ Sugar and Spice
- 1 cup brown sugar packed
- 1/4 cup flour
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon vinegar
- 1 cup water
- 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
- dash nutmeg
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 tablespoons butter or margarine
The Biscuit like Topping ~ The Baking
- 1 cup sifted all-purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 3/4 teaspoon salt
- 3 tablespoons shortening
- 3/4 cup milk
- 5 cups sliced pared, tart apples
Method
Old Fashioned Apple Pan Dowdy ~ Sugar and Spice
- In 1 quart saucepan, mix sugar, flour, and salt.
- Add vinegar and water; stir well.
- Cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until thick.
- Remove from heat; cool.
- Add cinnamon, and other stuff.
The Biscuit like Topping ~ The Baking
- Start heating oven to 375-degrees.
- While sugar and spice syrup cools, sift flour, baking powder and salt together twice.
- With a pastry blender, cut in shortening until lumps are the size of peas.
- Add milk and stir until flour mixture is moistened but still lumpy.
- Place apple slices in well greased, deep 10-inch pie plate or 12x8x2-inch baking dish.
- Pour “sugar and spice” syrup over them.
- Drop biscuit-like topping over apples.
- Bake 40 minutes.
