Date Loaf

Ingredients

1 package dates
1 cup nuts
1 cup boiling water
1 tablespoon shortening
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 egg
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
{1 teaspoon baking soda}

Method

Cut dates small.  Sprinkle with 1 teaspoon baking soda.  Pour 1 cup boiling water over, leave to cool.  Cream shortening, sugar, and egg together without separating egg, walnuts, vanilla.  Add to date mixture, mix well.  Then add flour sifted with salt.  Bake in slow 325-degree to 350-degree oven for 45-50 minutes.  

You may add 1 cup seedless raisins and a few more nuts to make a richer loaf.
