Dill Cucumber Pickle

1 gallon small cucumbers
1 quart white vinegar
2 quarts water
1 cup salt
Dill sprigs
Onion
1 teaspoon turmeric
1/2 teaspoon alum

Wash and dry cucumbers.  Place a sprig of dill (two or three stems) in the bottom of jars.  Pack cucumbers in jars.  Top with a small onion.  

Make a brine of vinegar, water, salt, alum, and turmeric.  Bring the mixture to boiling and pour it over the cucumbers in the jars.  Seal the jars.
