German Chocolate Cake with Icing
A classic recipe for German Chocolate Cake, along with a recipe for the traditional coconut and pecan topping.

Ingredients
- 2 cups sugar
- 1 cup Crisco
- 4 eggs
- 1 bar baking chocolate
- 1/2 cup boiling water
- 2 1/2 cups flour
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1 tsp soda
- 1 tsp vanilla
- Dash salt
Topping for German Chocolate Cake
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 cup milk
- 1 stick oleo
- 3 egg yolks, beaten
- 1 cup coconut
- 1/2 cup pecans
Method
German Chocolate Cake
- Cream shortening and sugar together, separate eggs and add egg yolks, one at a time to the shortening and sugar.
- Add chocolate to the boiling water, add flour and buttermilk, (dissolve soda in 1/4 cup of the buttermilk), add vanilla & salt.
- Fold in beaten egg whites.
- Bake 30 minutes at 350-degrees.
Topping for German Chocolate Cake
- Cook together slowly sugar, milk, butter, and egg yolks in a heavy broiler until thick, stirring constantly.
- Add coconut, pecans, and vanilla.
