Virginia Rolls

A vintage handwritten recipe for Virginia Rolls. Make these rolls with yeast, sugar, lukewarm water, scalded milk, melted shortening, sugar, salt, eggs, and flour.

Ingredients

  • 2 packages of dry yeast or two cakes of yeast
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 cup lukewarm water
  • 2 cups milk scalded
  • 2/3 cup melted shortening
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 4 teaspoons salt
  • 2 beaten eggs
  • 10 to 11 cups flour

Method

  • Soften yeast and dissolve sugar in water – add milk.
  • Cool to lukewarm, add shortening, sugar, and salt. {?} egg, beat well and add flour to make a soft dough.
  • Let stand ten minutes – kneed down and put in a greased bowl and set in the refrigerator.
  • Take out 2 hours before baking and make rolls.
  • Bake.

For 1/2 recipe use the following:

1/3 cup melted shortening
3/8 cup of sugar

1 egg
5 to 6 cups flour
