Leota's Date Nut Loaf

Ingredients

1 package pitted dates (1/2 pound)
1 teaspoon soda
1 cup boiling water
1/4 pound butter
1 cup sugar
1 egg, beaten
1 cup nuts, chopped
1 1/2 cups flour
1 teaspoon vanilla 

Method

Sprinkle 1 teaspoon soda over 1 package (1/2 pound) pitted dates. Then pour 1 cup boiling water over dates and soda and add 1/4 pound butter. Let stand while mixing the following: 1 cup sugar, 1 egg – beaten, 1 cup nuts – chopped. Then add the date mixture and 1 1/2 cups flour and 1 teaspoon vanilla. 

Bake 35 minutes in a moderate oven (400 degrees).
