Marble Cake

Ingredients

1/2 cup shortening
1 cup of sugar
2 cups of flour
3 level teaspoons baking powder
2/3 cup milk
3 egg whites
1/2 teaspoon flavoring

3 tablespoon cocoa
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon baking soda

Method

Cream shortening, add sugar and cream. Sift flour and measure, add baking powder and sift, add alternately with milk to the first mixture, beating the batter, add flavoring, fold in well-beaten egg whites. 

Divide mixture and leave 1/2 white; to the other half add cocoa, ground cloves, cinnamon, and baking soda. 

Beat. Put the two mixtures alternately by the spoonful into a large pan.
