Ingredients

1/3 cup butter
2/3 cup lard
2 cups sugar
3 eggs
4 cups sifted flour
1 teaspoon mixed spices
3 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup sweet milk

Method

Combine butter and lard, beat in sugar gradually, add eggs. Measure sifted flour with soda, salt, spices, and baking powder. Sift a little into fat, sugar and eggs, mix well, then alternate milk and sifted ingredients. Knead stiff dough lightly, turn out upon board, roll thin, cut into fancy shapes, bake in a moderate oven [350-degrees]. Sprinkle cookie with sugar after removing from oven. Dough must be stiff or it will make cooky greasy. Add more flour if necessary.
