1 cup molasses
1/2 cup shortening (melted lard preferred)
1 teaspoon soda
1/2 cup boiling water
1 1/2 cups flour
1 teaspoon cloves
2 teaspoons cinnamon
1 teaspoon all-spice
1/2 teaspoon ginger
1/2 pound raisins
1/2 pound currants
1/2 pound candied peel
1 wine glass brandy
Method
1 cup molasses, 1/2 cup shortening (melted lard preferred), 1 teaspoon soda dissolved in a large 1/2 cup boiling water, 2 1/2 cups flour, 1 teaspoon cloves, 2 teaspoons cinnamon, 1 teaspoon allspice, 1/2 teaspoon ginger, add 1/2 pound each raisin, currants, candied peel, 1 wine glass brandy.
