1/2 cup shortening
1 cup of sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 squares unsweetened chocolate, melted and cooled
2 eggs, well beaten
2 cups flour
1 cup sour milk
1 teaspoon soda
1 teaspoon vanilla


Sift flour once, measure soda and salt; and sift 3 times. Cream butter and sugar, add eggs and chocolate. Add flour and milk alternately. Beat well. Add vanilla, turn into greased pan. Bake in a moderate oven (325-degrees) for 60 minutes. 

Frost with a soft chocolate frosting.
