Virginia Rolls

Virginia Rolls, a vintage recipe card


2 packages of dry yeast, or two cakes of yeast
1 teaspoon sugar
1 cup lukewarm water
2 cups milk, scalded
2/3 cup melted shortening
3/4 cup sugar
4 teaspoons salt
2 beaten eggs
10 to 11 cups flour

1/2 recipe:

11 package of yeast
1/2 teaspoon sugar
1/2 cup lukewarm water
1 cup milk, scalded
1/3 cup melted shortening
3/8 cup of sugar
2 teaspoons salt
1 egg
5 to 6 cups flour


Soften yeast and dissolve sugar in water - add milk. Cool to lukewarm, add shortening, sugar, and salt. {?} egg, beat well and add flour to make a soft dough. Let stand ten minutes - kneed down and put in a greased bowl and set in the refrigerator. Take out 2 hours before baking and make rolls.
